THANK YOU for another excellent Fellows Discussion!

A special thank you to everyone who attended the Fellows-in-Residence Discussion Mood Lifters: A New Sustainable Approach to Mental Wellness. About 30 people turned out to the Santa Fe Public Library – Main Library Branch on Monday November 17, 2014 to hear Dr. Patricia Deldin talk about a novel mental wellness treatment program she has been developing while in residence at the Women’s International Study Center. Dr. Deldin has over twenty years of experience in clinical psychology and is currently a professor at the University of Michigan, Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry. She is the current Chairwoman and Director of Clinical Training for the Clinical Psychology program in the Department of Psychology and one of the Associate Directors of the University of Michigan Depression Center. She has published nearly 80 articles, most of which focus on the neuro-correlates of major depression.

In response to the lack of effective mental health interventions and the reality that approximately half the population of the United States will develop a mental illness during their lifetime, Dr. Deldin is seeking to develop a program that is affordable, comprehensive, accessible, scalable to an entire population, and evidence-based. The audience was the first group to hear about the elements of the preliminary program. With great interest and enthusiasm, we learned what scientific studies say about mood disorder and the effects of taking Vitamin D and Omega-3 oils, exercising, reducing alcohol consumption, and getting adequate sleep. We also learned about tools and therapies from different branches of psychology that can be effective in either reducing negative mood or increasing positive mood and sense of wellbeing, or both! The project is ambitious but also desperately needed. We wish Dr. Patricia Deldin our best as she continues to develop the program and a business model that works to revolutionize mental wellness. We cannot wait to see a Mood Lifters group in every town!
