Women's International Study Center Celebrates First Anniversary
One year ago today, on June 23, 2013, the Women's International Study Center (WISC) celebrated its founding at Acequia Madre House™ in Santa Fe with its many friends and supporters. WISC is proud to have had a successful first year, including convening an incredibly talented group of individuals to comprise our Board of Directors and our Academic Advisory Committee; honoring author Gail Sheehy with our 2013 Founder's Award; hiring a full-time Director; hosting the first cohort of Fellows-in-Residence; facilitating the Fellows' public presentations; and getting ready for our inaugural Symposium, Risk & Reinvention: How Women Are Changing the World, this August 15-16 at the Drury Plaza Hotel in Santa Fe.
We are particularly proud of the development of our two major educational programs. The Fellowships-in-Residence are professional development opportunities for women and men who wish to pursue work in WISC's four focus areas: women in the arts, sciences, cultural preservation and business. The Fellows represent diverse study areas and came from across the country and abroad this spring; more will come this summer and fall. They have greatly enhanced our understanding of how to support scholars and professionals who are studying women's accomplishments, and we hope we have provided them with an ideal launching point for the next phase of their work.
Our 2014 Symposium, Risk & Reinvention: How Women Are Changing the World, features U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in a keynote conversation with Albuquerque attorney Roberta Cooper Ramo, the first female President of the American Bar Association. We have nearly 30 other dynamic panelists on the program who are experts in science, art, law, cultural preservation, business and labor force analysis and who will share their expertise, perspectives and experiences. Risk & Reinvention will focus on women’s accomplishments to date, the status of women today, the risks and challenges that remain, and inspiration to reinvent opportunities for the future. Our Symposia are uniquely designed to examine these issues from diverse, inter-sectional lenses: discussions are cross-disciplinary, inter-generational, multi-cultural and global. As such, WISC is proud to encourage participation of younger adults with sponsorships for individuals age 29 and under who are early in their careers, and scholarships for college students who are from or are studying in New Mexico.
